An academy trained California painter of landscape, portrait, and still lifes, Clarence Hinkle experimented with a variety of styles and was part of a "Group of Eight" California artists who exhibited modernist work.

ARTIST WORLD RECORD

Born in New York City in 1836, Ransome Holdredge came to California via the Isthmus of Panama in 1858 and worked as a draftsman at the Mare Island Naval Yard. His paintings of the 1860s and early 1870s were signed "Holdridge" and were done in the realistic style of the Hudson River School.

ARTIST WORLD RECORD

Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1836 and growing up in Cambridge, Winslow Homer became one of the all-time leading figures in American art, known for his marine genre paintings and for his espousing of realism, especially of American life.

Born and raised in Nyack, New York, Edward Hopper became one of the best-known painters of 20th-century American genre and landscape.  He was especially known for interiors with isolated figures, for rural landscapes and marine scenes. 

Printmaker Earl Horter, born in 1881 in Germantown, Pennsylvania, was known for his realistic etchings and aquatints of urban scenes, though he was also an illustrator and painter.

Raised in Potter Valley, near Ukiah, California, Grace Hudson became an acclaimed painters of Native American subjects, especially the Pomo Indians, independent tribes of coastal and inland Northern California.
