Lucia Mathews and her husband, Arthur, were two of the most prominent artists in Northern California in the early 20th century.  They were leaders in what became known as the California Decorative Style, the West Coast version of the Arts and Crafts Movement.  Their philosophy was that one's environment should be in total harmony and that people should surround themselves only with objects they consider beautiful. 

Landscape painter, etcher, muralist. Born in Astoria, IL on April 17, 1875.

Born in Fingal, Tasmania, Francis McComas became noted for his paintings, many in Tonalist style, of California oaks, cypress trees, desert landscape and Indian subjects.  His specialty was watercolor.

Born in San Francisco, CA on March 29, 1878. As a youth McGlynn was active with the Columbia Park Boys Club (a precursor of Boy Scouts) for which he contributed artwork and served as editor for their first magazine.

ARTIST WORLD RECORD

Benjamin Newton Messick, known as "the American Daumier," painted, drew, and lithographed Americana as he found it in his hometown of Los Angeles.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, Willard Metcalf was a well-known East Coast Impressionist painter, teacher, and illustrator who also did painting in the Southwest. He was heralded in 1925 as the "poet laureate of the New England hills."
