ARTIST WORLD RECORD HAMMER PRICE

Landscape painter, Alexis Matthew Podchernikoff was born in Vladimir, Russia in 1886 into a family of artists. Podchernikoff first studied art with his grandfather Dmitri Zolotarieff and later with Ilya Repin and Verestchagin. In Moscow he was awarded a gold medal and his work "My Beloved Russian Woods" was purchased by the Royal Art Commission.

ARTIST WORLD RECORD

Born and raised in the Bay Area, George Post attended the California School of Fine Arts. In 1927, he went into advertising, printing and watercolor painting. In 1933, he lived in the Mother Lode mining area and also did a mining theme mural for Sonora High School. From 1937 to 1938, he traveled in Europe and Mexico, and in the 1940s was an art instructor at Stanford. 

A painter most remembered most for his beach scenes of carefree atmosphere, Edward Potthast was one of the significant 19th-century American artists from Cincinnati, which at the time of his birth was a burgeoning art center and a place of refuge for German immigrants including the Potthast family.
