Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Paul Sample established his reputation as a Regionalist landscape, figure and genre painter, particularly of New England subject matter.

Matteo Sandona, a California portrait, still life and figure painter and etcher, was primarily known for his portraiture. He was born in Schio, Italy, in 1883 and was raised in the Alps. As a child he showed talent in drawing and modeling, and his parents encouraged his creative desire.

Born in Florence, Italy to a New England doctor and wife, John Singer Sargent became a leading portrait and figure painter of subjects in international society during the Gilded Age. Late in his career, he was a leading proponent of watercolor as a respectable medium for finished work. 

Born in Cantonville, New Jersey, Frank Sauerwein, during a short lifetime of thirty-nine years, became a specialist of western scene painting including Southwest Indians in their landscape. "Had he not died in 1910, he likely could have become the seventh founding member of the Taos Society of Artists" ('Frank Paul Sauerwein', Grauer, Harrison, Holmes).

ARTIST WORLD RECORD

A highly successful illustrator who later became one of California's best known desert landscape painters, he was born in Medoc, Missouri. His only formal art training was several months with portraitist J. Laurie Wallace in Omaha, Nebraska.
