Born in New York City, Robert Weir became more recognized for his teaching of art than his own paintings. As a youngster, he was befriended by painter John Wesley Jarvis and also received instruction from Robert Cooke, an English heraldic artist. When he was a teenager, his painting was so remarkable that his canvases sold in New York as the work of the Old Masters.

A painter of landscapes, portraits, and genre, he depicted wide-ranging subjects in Europe and the United States but is best known for his views of Marin County, California.

The product of a Midwestern upbringing, he had two years of study at the University of Cincinnati School of Design and then continued his art studies in Munich.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, James Whistler became one of the most influential late 19th-century American painters and etchers, although he lived primarily in England.  He worked in a wide variety of styles that included Impressionism, Symbolism, and Art Nouveau.  He was especially influential in the Tonalist movement and was a catalyst for those who wanted to break away from prescribed academic methods, credited with being the first American modernist to influence European art.

A nationally known landscape painter, who spent the prime of his career in California, Orrin White was born in Hanover, Illinois.  He was artistically inclined at an early age but did not pursue an art career until he was in his thirties.  After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Notre Dame University in 1902, he studied textile design at the Philadelphia School of Applied Art until 1906.

Born in a log cabin and raised on a farm near Springfield, Ohio, on the sparsely settled frontier, Worthington Whittredge was to later establish himself as one of the foremost painters of the Second Generation Hudson River School painters.  His artwork incorporates the topographical style of the Hudson River School with the use of light and color typical of the French Barbizon School and Impressionism.  His subjects include the Catskill Mountains in New York and the White Mountains in New Hampshire, in addition to the Great Plains of the American West.
