ARTIST WORLD RECORD HAMMER PRICE

Born in Viborg, Denmark, Olaf Wieghorst was a child acrobatic performer from the age of nine when he began appearances at Tivoli Theater in Copenhagen and later toured Europe. He also learned horseback riding working on a stock farm, and horses became a major focus of his admiration and later his painting. 

Guy Carleton Wiggins adopted the bright palette and lively brushwork of the impressionist movement, and is best known for his New York City snow scenes and landscapes in the area of the Impressionist colony of Old Lyme, Connecticut. 

Lemuel Maynard Wiles was born in 1826 in West Perry, New York, in the Genesee Valley. A noted landscape painter in the realist tradition of the Hudson River School, he did some western landscapes, which resulted from travels in California and Colorado in 1873 and 1874. On his way to California, he traveled through Panama.

ARTIST WORLD RECORD

The mainstay of the California School of Design in San Francisco in the late 19th century, he was Director and teacher from its opening in 1874 until his death twelve years later. In this position, he influenced succeeding generations of painters that made San Francisco one of the art capitals of the western world. Among his followers were William Keith, Thomas Hill, and Samuel Marsden Brookes.

ARTIST WORLD RECORD

One of the major American Regionalist painters along with Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry, Grant Wood was born in Anamosa, Iowa, and spent his childhood in Cedar Rapids.
