Born in 1861, Theodore Butler began his training as a student at the Art Students League in New York City in 1882 with William Merritt Chase. 

Born near Genoa, Italy on Jan. 2, 1858, Giuseppe Cadenasso, at age nine, sailed from Genoa to northern California where his uncle owned a vineyard.  As a young man he moved to San Francisco where he worked as a barber, waiter, and sang Italian opera at the Tivoli Opera House.

ARTIST WORLD RECORD

William Cahill was known for his artwork and his involvement in the School for Illustration and Painting in Los Angeles.

A painter of still lifes as well as landscapes, Emil Carlsen was especially noted for his still lifes of humble everyday objects in the tradition of 17th-century Dutch painters.

Pruett Carter was an illustrator who worked predominantly for women's magazines and was credited with being one of the few illustrators who was able to keep a creative edge working within in that market.

Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt is best known for her mother and child compositions and also for her color prints, based on Japanese woodblock techniques and that combined drypoint, etching, and aquatint.  From 1890, she had her own printing press at her home. 

Born in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, George Catlin became the first American artist of stature to visit and depict the Plains Indians on his own volition, and he spent about eight years traveling among the 48 North American Indian tribes including to Alaska.

ARTIST WORLD RECORD

Born in Grand Rapids, MI on March 7, 1887. Chamberlain began his art training in his early teens in Grand Rapids under Mathias Alten, and beginning in 1910 spent two years in the Hague observing and studying the works of the early Dutch painters.
