ARTIST WORLD RECORD

Landscape painter. Born in Mt. Vernon, IL on June 10, 1894.

Gilbert graduated from the Evanston Academy in 1913 and then spent two years at Northwestern University.

In 1917 he attended the U.S. Naval Academy Officer’s School at Annapolis and then served abroad.

Following his military stint, he moved to Southern California about 1920. After studying in Los Angeles at the Otis Art Institute, he had futher training in Paris and London.

His Monterey Oaks won him the Hallgarten prize at the NAD in 1929 and the following year he won both the Ranger and the Murphy prizes.

In 1930 he settled in Monterey and became known for his landscapes and bright, sunny coastal scenes of the Monterey Peninsula. An impressionist, his palettte seldom varied and stayed mainly in the blue, yellow, green, and pastel shades.

His works won many awards in California shows during the 1920s and 1930s. During his later years, gilbert spent most of his time on his ranch near Stockton where he died on April 28, 1970.

Works held: CPLH; NAD; LACMA; Springville (Utah) Museum; Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art; Bohemian Club.
