California Art Auction is a service of John Moran Auctioneers, the leading auction house specializing in California art.

Koch, Henry

Koch, Henry (1846-1906).

Landscape painter. Born in Germany in 1846.

Koch studied to be a lawyer in Munich before immigrating to Philadelphia.

After opting for an art career, he worked for a firm that made watercolor portraits.

During the Civil War he contributed battle sketches to eastern newspapers. During this period he returned to Europe to study art in Munich, Dresden and Paris.

After coming to California in 1886 on an assignment to paint Yosemite, he elected to remain.

Upon settling in Los Angeles, he was vice-president of the Los Angeles School of Art & Design for 16 years.

He died of apoplexy in Aihambra, CA on May 14, 1906.
