ARTIST WORLD RECORD

Landscape painter, muralist.

Born in Waverly, MO on Aug. 21, 1875.

Puthuff studied at the AIC before moving to Colorado in 1889 to study at University of Denver Art School.

He arrived in Los Angeles in 1903 and for 23 years worked as a commercial artist painting billboards while painting landscapes in his leisure.

In Southern California, he lived in Eagle Rock, La Crescenta, Corona del Mar, and La Canada. After 1926 he was able to abandon commercial art and devote full time to fine art and exhibitions.

He is nationally famous for his lyric interpretations of the Southern California deserts.

Putuff died in Corona del Mar on May 12, 1972.

Member: Calif. Art Club (cofounder); Laguna Beach AA (cofounder); Calif. WC Society; Painters & Sculptors of LA; Palette & Chisel Club, Chicago; SFAA; Pasadena Society of Artists; Salmagundi Club, NY; Southern States Art League.

Exhibited: LACMA, 1914, 1917 (solos), 1929; SFAA, 1916; Calif. State Fair, 1930; GGIE, 1939.

Awards: dozens from 1892 including diploma, Alaska-Yukon Expo, Seattle, 1909; bronze medal, Paris Salon, 1914; two silver medals, Panama-Calif. Expo, San Diego, 1915.

Works held: Hackley Museum, Muskegon, MI; Laguna Beach Museum of Art; LACMA; Pasadena Art Inst.; Springville (UT) Museum of Art; Laughlin Theatre, Long Beach (murals); Municipal Collections of Denver and Phoenix.
